Trying Technology

As I settle more into Indie author life, I’ve started doing a lot more research on ways I can make my workflow easier. Not only so I can write better books for all of you, but also so I can maintain my work schedule without giving up any semblance of a life.

One of the things I've been trying out is writing through vocal dictation. Being able to write without actually having to sit with my hands to the keyboard would give me a lot more freedom. I could write standing up and walking around or, if my computer is not available, by dictating into my phone. The possibilities are endless! I'm not sure how I feel about the reality of dictation yet. Currently, I'm dictating this blog. I'm not sure how clean it will turn out, if editing transcription will take more time than it would have taken to type, or if it'll just sound weird because it's not the format I'm used to working in.

I'm excited to explore new avenues and new technology that can help me write better books for you. It goes with the whole audiobook experiment I've been working on. In just a few short weeks, Death of Day (a short story featuring Raina from the Girl of Glass series) will be available in audio format as well as in an extended ebook form. Getting to work in this new medium is so neat!

Audio will give me the ability to reach a new audience of people who either prefer to only take in their books as audio because of their lifestyle (commuting and things like that) or who are unable to read in traditional formats due to poor eyesight or other physical limitations. Reaching readers is very important to me, and I’d hate for something as simple as not having an audiobook of my story available to prohibit readers from joining our adventures.

I’m not sure if I'll stick with this vocal dictation system, but I'm excited to give it a try!

Now to go back through this blog and figure out how many things dictation messed up.
