The Tip of the Iceberg

The Tip of the Iceberg

There are so many aspects of being an author that go on behind the scenes.

The book that ends up in a reader's hands is only the tip of the iceberg. There is a mammoth amount of work lurking below the surface.

For me, the iceberg looks a bit like this.

Iceberg of Work

There are so many tiny bits of work that go into creating a manuscript and a shocking amount more work that goes into creating and distributing a book.

Why did I want to write a blog about this?

To emphasize―for all the people who are dreaming of writing and publishing a book―that being an author is hard.

That DOES NOT mean it isn't worth the effort.

For me, having my books out in the world is worth every late night at my computer and every breakdown I've had about learning some new technical process to make publishing go.

Writing a book is hard.

Submitting queries is hard.

Indie publishing is hard.

You are not a failure for taking a long time to draft a book.

You are not weak for feeling devastated when you receive a rejection.

You are not useless for feeling overwhelmed by the publishing process.

It's just hard.

So take a breath, realize that there is a whole lot of struggle behind every book you hold in your hands, and be kind to yourself.

The end of the journey is worth the struggle to get there.
